It's not surprising that a lot of people don't like to fly. The idea of riding in a 300 tonne machine hurtling through the air at 900 km/h, nearly 11 kilometres above terra firma is a bit, well, remarkable. But, in terms of kilometres travelled, flying is the safest form of mass transportation. That's not to say it's perfect, but generally speaking, it's pretty amazing, given the number of flights in any one day.
Recently, the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC) released its 2012 list of the world's safest airlines. The rankings are based on the German research outfit's own statistics and those compiled from accidents and serious incidents over the past 30 years in relation to kilometres flown.
